Green coffee beans are available at many coffee shops and specialty stores. They may seem hard to find, but are fairly easy if you look around; ask if your local artisanal coffee shop stocks green coffee beans because they most likely do. Can You Roast Coffee Beans In Your Oven?
Ovens are not the best place to roast beans if you are a beginner because they are not ventilated. The lack of airflow leads to a fairly uneven roast. But, if you learn to use it right, the oven can help you achieve a rich and flavorful roast. You need to place your beans on a baking sheet or pan and preheat your oven to the desired temperature for your roast. Can Your Popcorn Maker Roast Coffee Beans?
This is one of the most tried and tested methods for coffee roasting at home, especially for beginners. Though these machines are not designed to roast coffee, they are recommended for their ease of use and even roasts.
Popcorn poppers also work quickly, even though they only allow small batches to be roasted at a time. All you need to do is follow the instructions on how to use the machine and filling it with the appropriate amount.
You will reach the first crack stage in about 3 minutes; it is that quick! For light roasts, you will be done in about four minutes, and darker roasts will be done between six and seven minutes.
How To Roast: Light Or Dark?
Once you have started roasting coffee and are getting the hang of it, it is a simple matter of timing and temperature to achieve your desired roast. If you prefer your coffee bright and acidic (Brewing Low Acid Coffees), a light roast would work best for you. Achieve this by roasting your beans between 180°C – 205°C (356°F – 401°F) until they reach the first crack stage.
If you want a roast with slightly more body, but still want the brightness, a medium roast coffee is for you. Roast your bean between 210°C- 220°C (410°F – 428°F) and stop the process right before the second crack.
Dark roast coffees are full-bodied, aromatic and strong in flavor. If that is what you want to achieve at the end of your roasting process, roast your beans at 240°C (464°F) till the end of the second crack. Do not exceed that time as you might end up with burnt coffee.
Perfecting your timing on the roasts will take some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can start roasting to your exact specifications.
Can You Grind Hot Beans Out Of The Oven?
Coffee beans need to be rested after roasting. If the beans are not allowed to rest, they will not be able to develop their ideal and true taste and will likely not lose the taste of the combustion gases and fumes created in the roasting process.
Ideally, you want your beans to rest anywhere between one and three days to allow them to develop the best taste possible. Some coffees do reach this taste earlier, but it’s better to just wait it out so you can enjoy your hard work to its fullest.
How Do You Influence The Caffeine Amount When Roasting?
There is a lot of chatter around roasting times affecting the amount of caffeine in your final cup. Some people say lighter roasts have more caffeine than darker roasts, meaning you should roast your coffee for a shorter amount of time if you want more caffeine in your cup. In reality, the roast itself does not influence the caffeine amount present in the bean.
What actually happens during the roasting process is that your bean starts to lose its mass. Darker roast beans are a lot less dense than light roast beans. What that means for caffeine content is that you take a scoop of light roast beans, you are getting more mass, hence, more caffeine. Darker roast beans of the same scoop size will be less dense, which means your final cup will have less caffeine. This is the reason why people assume that roast time has an effect on the coffee bean’s caffeine content.
Do You Need To Cool The Beans?
Cooling your beans after roasting them is as essential a part of the process as the rest of them. Once your beans have been roasted, they need to be cooled fairly quickly to produce quality coffee. If the beans are not cooled properly and quickly, it can affect the overall taste of the beans. The beans need to be cooled to a temperature below 40°C within four minutes for the truest taste.
You can cool your beans by transferring them into a large metal bowl or colander and shaking them and stirring them until they are cool. Do this in a well-ventilated area or under a fan to make the process quicker and more effective.
